First Grade

        Reading List!

This listing of books offers book titles that are popular with boys and girls who are entering first grade.

This list is a good place to start your summer reading, but it is only a beginning.  Other titles by these authors or other authors offer enjoyable reading. Try to choose books that are of high interest to your child.  If your child is a reader, choose books on his or her level.  The level 1-4 books are great for beginning readers.  You can find these at the library or a book store.  If your child is just blending, find books that will encourage him or her to blend short words as well as words with long vowels.

Ways to enjoy Reading

  • Listen to a book being read aloud.

  • Take turns reading to a friend or parent.

  • Read the book by yourself and tell someone about your favorite parts.

  • Record yourself reading the book or parts of the book a second time.  Listen to the tape.

This list is designed to give your “to be” first grader

Second Grade

Dear Second Grade Parents,

The following is a list of suggested reading.  Please follow the guidelines specified below when helping your child choose books to read.  Remember that the more interested they are in the subject, the more they will read, so let your child choose his/her books.

Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day - by Judith Viorst

Amazing Grace - by Mary Hoffman

Ameila Bedelia - by Peggy Parish

Beezus and Ramona - by Beverly Cleary

The Bracelet - by Yoshiko Uchida

Ramona the Pest - by Beverly Cleary

Stellaluna - by Janell Cannon

Sylvester and the Magic Pebble - by William Steig

I recommend the “five finger” rule when choosing a book to read.  Students should read the first page of the book (or about 100 words), and for each word they don’t know, put up one finger.  At the end of the page, if they have five fingers up, then the book is too hard.  If no fingers are up, the book is too easy.  The goal is to have two or three fingers up.  By using this method students can independently choose an appropriate book.

I strongly encourage students to join the local libraries’ summer reading programs in El Dorado Hills, Folsom, and Cameron Park.  Students can win prizes for reading a set amount.  If your child does not already have his/her own library card, please help him/her apply for one and encourage him/her to be responsible for returning the books on time.   I would also like to refer you to a website that you can explore with your child:  http://atn-reading-lists.wikispaces.com.  The navigation bar on the left side of the home page will help you select lists of books for your child to choose from.

Remember to read to your children daily as it is important for them to hear appropriate expression as well as to spend that precious one on one time enjoying a vicarious adventure with a parent. You may also want to purchase a “summer bridge” book to keep your child’s skills sharpened.

The following is a list of supplies needed for the school year.  Please DO NOT put names on the items.  We will replenish them as needed.

Supplies can be purchased at Wal-Mart very inexpensively.  Please DO NOT send pencil boxes.  We will provide pencils and a place to store them.

Our “treasure chest” is ALWAYS in need of new items.  Your students will probably earn frequent trips to this chest!  We would greatly appreciate any items you might donate to the chest.  The Dollar Tree and the Wishing Well are good places to find inexpensive treasures!  Also, if your child buys a “Happy Meal” with a toy he/she already owns, we would appreciate him/her donating the extra to our chest.

Thank you for your assistance.  I am looking forward to working with all of you to make this an exciting year of academic and emotional growth for your children.   Have a wonderful summer!

                                                                             Sincerely,

Your child will be required to read this summer in preparation for 4th grade.

Reading list!

Assignment 1. Please have your child read Frindle by Andrew Clements. When we return to school in August, he/she will participate in class discussions and activities. Be sure to send the book to school with your student on the first day of school.

Assignment 2. Read, read, read! Below are some suggestions which span a variety of interests and abilities.

The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by C. S. Lewis

Little House Series by Laura Ingalls Wilder

Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo

Remember, this is just a short list of suggestions. Your child is more likely to read if he/she is allowed to choose. A wonderful way to do this is to plan a trip to the library or bookstore to allow your child options. At the same time, you can find some books of interest yourself and model the power of reading! Have a great summer and see you in August.

Fifth Grade

Read any and all of these wonderful books this summer!  The following is just a suggested list of typical 5th grade books, based on reading and interest levels.  However, the goal is to read two complete books.  So, you may select a book from the list or one of your choice.  You must complete a report on this chosen book.   The book report should be a poster that includes a summary of the book (plot, characters, and settings) and an illustration.  Be ready to present your book report when you return to school in August.  Then, you must read the mandatory book which will be Old Yeller.  Be ready to answer questions about this book and talk about the plot, characters and settings.  You will be tested on this book.
